This Saturday saw the birth of a new parkrun in Street.  Our very own Martin Hooper and James Andrews have been heavily involved with setting this up.  Martin took the role of Race Director for the first time and James was the time keeper, the other club members who helped on the day were Brian Clark, Roxane Pratt and myself. 206 parkrunner’s turned up with an impressive 75 of those runners completely new to parkrun. I am sure the organisers were delighted with this number of newbies which may suggest a lot of these beginners were local runners!

The event starts at Strode College Sports Centre and is 3 laps of 2 connected fields.  The course is quite an impressive use of space, I marshalled at the bottom section of the second field and was in a great position to see the runners snaking around the course.  The feedback was excellent, and a lot of runners mentioned that there was a “Great friendly atmosphere”.  I certainly clapped and shouted support at all the runners!

The first runner galloped home in an impressive time of 17 minutes and 30 seconds.  Steve Driscoll was the first Langport Runner home (17th place) in only his 4th parkrun with a time of 23:30.   Dave Westerman another stranger to the 5k distance in recent years also appeared as if by magic.  Let us now hope that now they have a venue on their door step that they will be ‘strangers no more’ and they will become regulars.   Tracey Osmond ran too but unfortunately forgot her bar code.

Over at Montacute, normal service resumed with Liz coming top of our table, Kyle in the top 5 finishers, Sue also scoring a high percentage and with Dave putting in his usual consistent performance.
