March 2006 A rather belated Happy New Year! This newsletter should have been out in January but you didn't send me any news! Anyway after this endless long winter, spring is just around the corner and the clocks go forward on Sunday 26th March, so get your off road shoes out ready for the first Wednesday evening trek along the Parrett! With this in mind it was requested at a committee meeting that all Langport members should be reminded of our Code of Conduct. I have included it in this edition. It is also on the website. Please read it carefully and adhere to it - it's important for the safety of all of us. Pete has redesigned the Langport Runners website www.langportrunners.co.uk It has lots of information on it but in order for it to be really successful we need to use it regularly and also send Pete up to date news on events etc. Look out for a new logo coming to your running vest soon. It was decided to change the above logo which is not appropriate now we are at Ridgeway Hall and not the Sports Centre. Finally you will find my chocolate brownie recipe in this edition - well I threatened you with recipes if you didn't give me any running news! In the next edition there will be a knitting pattern for woolly vests - you have been warned! It is always a well organized event by the Ilminster Lions and this year was no exception. The race starts on a hill and continues to be rather undulating for the next 6K. Then there is a nice freewheeling section downhill before you pick up the road into Ilminster for the last 2K. Free soup or hot drinks are given out at the end - very welcome this year after the wet run. The winner this year set a new course record of 31.59. The first event of the 2006 Somerset Race Series saw a record turnout, with 150 finishers. The race came in the middle of a long spell of bitterly cold weather and there were gasps of astonishment at the start as several 'hard nuts' ran in singlets and shorts. Langport had a very respectable number competing, which was encouraging because last year our support for the Series had been waning. Let's hope we continue to contribute a good level of support for our county competition. Rob Ellis had his usual good run to finish well up the field and John Cox was our second finisher. Strangely, John was listed as 'unattached' and I suspect that Sadie knows a little more about this than she was willing to divulge to me! As has become traditional, the race is worth attending if only for the splendid feast of cakes and hot drinks afterwards. Grahame's relatively slow run can be explained by the fact that he ran the course a second time (after refreshments) as marathon training.. The long dry spell continued from the previous week (Babcary race) and it was still decidedly chilly. However, late in the race those of us at the tail end had the fun of running in sleet, and then at the end a heavy hail storm drove every one inside at the HQ. Last year heavy rain came at the end of the race, so for two successive years we have been lucky to run in quite dry conditions which would have become much more difficult had the races started half an hour later! An unfortunate feature of this race and the Babcary a week earlier is that our ladies have not been notable for their numbers - only 2 and 4 respectively. Come on ladies; please give the club a little more support in this county-wide series. Once more, worth going to for the homemade refreshments! At least one lady took the wrong route, probably because an extra marshal was needed at one of the woodland track forks. Crispin gave me his place and I hope I did him justice. It's amazing how many Grizzly places there are going spare come the beginning of March each year, which is great for those like me who neglect to get their entry form in on time. As usual this was a particularly grueling 20 mile (ish) with a particularly rancid bog to negotiate and numerous tricky hills to climb to sap the energy and enthusiasm. For those looking to add a little spice to their London Marathon training schedules, this is a great day out but the bitter cold wind made it a long day for supporters ( those who ventured out of the coffee shop ) and marshals alike. For me this race was the first long run in my build up to the Krakov marathon in May and another bid to crack the elusive three hour barrier. I will leave the Grizzly race details for others to report on. However it was great to travel to a major race some way from home and bump into other club members amongst the 1500 or so starters. As a club it is vital that we remain visible and encourage as many members as possible to enter these events. In particular we need to continue and even improve the way these events are publicized within our club, perhaps identifying attractive events where Langport runners endeavour to enter a large contingent.....this is surely part of what being a member of a club is all about. On this note I suggest the Clarendon Way, a pleasant off road marathon scheduled for Sunday 1st October 2006 and run between Winchester and Salisbury would make for an ideal weekend adventure. Winchester (race start) is a lovely city for an overnight stop with lots of history, shops, restaurants etc. The event itself should appeal to a large number of runners because there is also a relay race (team event) and half marathon for those not keen on the full 26.2 miles. The drive home after the race is not too long which is a bonus. Just a thought!!! Rob IS THE GRIZZLY TOUGH?? (DO BEARS SHIT IN THE WOODS?!!) Well, YES, is the answer!! A couple of weeks ago, a few loony members of Langport Runners (Kathy R, me, Rob, Tony R, Paul Gold and Russell) pitched up at Seaton, to take part in one of the toughest runs in the South-West. Having done the 20-mile Grizzly last year with Liz Martin on a glorious fine sunny day, and really enjoyed it, I thought I'd give it another go. And Kathy, being Kathy, needed no persuasion to join me. You get plenty of warning in the pre-race bumf (e.g. "...should take just under your marathon time", "Course varies from year to year...depending on landslips, mudslides, flooding and tectonic movement", "The route will differ from last year's but will be (not much) harder!", "Photos - we hope to have shots of you, or what remains of you, at the finish", etc. (But don't let that put you off....!) However, what a difference in conditions this year! - heavy drizzle, a real hooley blowing, and very COLD (Took my jacket off briefly somewhere in the middle of the course - big mistake!). After a tough start - 500m along the shingle beach into a strong headwind, it was back along Seaton front and straight up and over the top and down to Beer, then steep up and down to Branscombe (more blimmin' pebbles), then up... and down... and steep up... and down...(repeat 15 more times), and then, when you're completely cream-crackered, you have 50m of knee-deep, really sloppy mud to contend with (need to ensure your shoes are glued on at this point - but as the whole course was really muddy anyway, you didn't really notice much difference), followed by a paddle through a thigh-deep freezing river! A few more ups and downs and you're nearly at the finish - trouble is it's immediately preceded by another 50m of PEBBLES, plus that ol' headwind again! So, why did we do this? It really is GREAT FUN!! The atmosphere and camaraderie is excellent, lots of laughs, fantastic views (even this time when the sea was distinctly moody, grey and murky), lots of support round the course, lots of inspiring little notices ("There's tunnel at the end of the light", and "Everything you thought you ever knew is wrong", etc) - and the whole event is run to raise money for charity. And, best of all, you get a good hose down at the end from a hunky fireman (if you're into that)!! We can thoroughly recommend it - spring hasn't sprung until the Grizzly has been run!! Will I do it again?? - Do bears shit in the woods?!! It is therefore essential that, whilst out running as a club, we are seen to be polite, responsible, and set a good example to others. The following advice should enable us to do this, but also be as SAFE as possible! Although we have captains and leaders, if we all take responsibility both for ourselves and for those we are with, we should enjoy safe and happy runs!! AT ALL TIMES (DAY OR NIGHT): * BE SEEN! You can never be too visible! * During the day, if running on the road, always wear bright or light-coloured/ clothing - fluorescent is good. * At night, ALWAYS wear light-coloured clothing plus a REFLECTIVE (not just fluorescent) bib or sash - a small wristband is inadequate. Wearing dark colours at night is asking for trouble! * NEVER ASSUME YOU'VE BEEN SEEN - Always be cautious with traffic * ALWAYS FACE ONCOMING TRAFFIC (i.e. run on the right-hand side of the road) if there is no pavement. The only exception is right-hand bends - in this case, cross over well beforehand, and cross back afterwards. This way, you can always see what's coming and take evasive action if necessary. * BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER ROAD/PAVEMENT USERS! * - do NOT force pedestrians into the road - do NOT step off the pavement without checking behind - cyclists do not make a noise! * - NEVER run across the road in front of cars! * - just BE AWARE generally! * * BE AWARE OF OTHER HAZARDS * whilst out and about- avoid running up to or spooking jumpy livestock - SLOW DOWN or WALK! * - if running through long grass where livestock have been, always check for ticks when you get home. If you get a tick bite followed by a red ring round the bite, or start getting flu-like symptoms, see your doctor ASAP - Lyme's disease can be serious! * - if you have to climb over gates, always climb over at the hinged end. Climbing over the latch end puts pressure on the gate and causes it to drop. RUNNING AT NIGHT: BE SEEN!! ALWAYS wear a REFLECTIVE bib or sash - See previous page - this cannot be emphasised enough! The club will not take any responsibility for you if you run in the dark without wearing something reflective. * ALWAYS RUN WITH SOMEONE ELSE, preferably someone/a group of similar pace and ability * * BEFORE SETTING OUT: * - know who's in your group, who's leading, who's at the back * - know your route, and stick to it * - know the distance, and make sure you are up to it * - make sure someone else knows where your group is going * - be aware of conditions, e.g. freezing temperatures, icy/slippery pavements, etc * * IF LEAVING STREET-LIT AREAS, ALWAYS TAKE A TORCH! * - It helps drivers/other people see you * - If you cannot see where you are putting your feet in the dark, SLOW DOWN OR WALK! * * WHILE YOU ARE OUT... * - stick with your group and try to ensure the group stays together * - if you have to depart from the group for any reason, avoid going alone, and make sure you tell someone else in the group where you are going. * JUNIORS (i.e. those under 18 years of age) Before you can start running with the club, you must produce a Consent Form signed by a parent or guardian. If you do not have one, ask Steve Brown or a member of the Running Club Committee - this form must be signed before you can run with the club. REFER TO THE HIGHWAY CODE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON ROAD SAFETY!! PLEASE HELP In an effort to raise Langport Runners profile within the community as well as advertising the club it has been agreed to assist the Langport Area Development Trust (LADT) in two ventures this year. Friday 19th May 2006 - 2K Fun Run - It has been agreed that we will assist with the running of a small fun run, starting at the Visitor Centre at 6.45pm and finishing on Cocklemoor. Volunteers are required to act as marshals and at the finish to take names/times of finishers. Langport International Festival of Walking - 3rd and 4th June 2006. This event is taking place on two days and will consist of 5K, 10K, 20K and 42K walks on each day. The intention is to develop this festival into an annual event which next year will include a marathon that will be jointly organized with LADT and Langport Runners. This year LADT has asked if we could assist by providing some manpower to sweep the routes, pick up signs and remove red/white tape around the routes. Volunteers are needed for the following: Saturday - 1 or 2 people for 10K Langport 2.15pm 1 or 2 people 32K loop Midelney 2.00pm (could be split) Sunday - 1 or 2 people 15K loop Eli's to Eli's then Bowdens 2.15pm 1 or 2 people 32K loop (could be split) Long Sutton to Long Sutton 14K, 18K Long Sutton to Eli's. Route descriptions will be given. Mobiles will be required and there will be support/water stops. Transport will be provided to the start. Adjourn to the Bar on completion! Please assist in these events - see Pete for more information. Liz's Chocolate Brownie recipe - the ultimate comfort food for post races or after long cold runs on the Quantocks!
